Consequence and likelihood in risk estimation: A matter of balance in UK health and safety risk assessment practice
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper argues that existing semi-quantitative risk estimation methodologies commonly applied within UK health and safety risk assessment practice are biased towards considerations of possible consequence rather than overall risk. This is seen to be leading to a slow shift towards risk aversion within UK health and safety decision making. A reworking of existing risk estimation methodology is proposed. Instead of seeking an explicit value for the level of risk the paper suggests that in lower risk industrial and commercial sectors it is sufficient to establish whether the risk is likely to fall within an intolerable, tolerable or acceptable risk zone. Once this evaluation has been completed it is further argued that risks judged to fall within the tolerable zone, which equates to a legal duty to reduce risk so far as reasonably practicable in UK, can be prioritised using values of exposure to the hazard. The method is seen as having significant advantages over other semi-quantitative risk estimation approaches presently used in UK. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Introduction: compressed natural gas stations are one of the most critical and dangerous urban land uses and should be highly regarded. The domino effects of accidents are essential concepts in urban areas. The present study aims to analyze explosive domino accidents at compressed natural gas stations (CNG). Modeling the consequence in fuel stations can minimize the likelihood of a crisis and l...

Introduction: Nearly half of occupational accidents in Iran occur in construction sites. Therefore, modeling of occupational accidents in these sites is one of the solutions to design safety strategies to reduce occupational accidents in the field of construction. This study was designed and conducted with the aim of modeling the cause-consequence of accidents in construction sites. Material a...

Who could disagree with the seemingly common-sense reasoning that: “We must learn from the things that go wrong.”? Despite major investments to improve patient safety, relatively few evaluations demonstrate convincing reductions in risk, harm, serious error or death. This disappointing trajectory of improvement from learning from errors or Safety-I as it is sometimes known has led some research...

متن کاملLetter to Editor: Positive predictive value of diabetes mellitus risk assessment
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important public health challenge [1 ].Different studies predicted that the frequency of diabetic patients will be increased to 642 million throughout the world by 2040 [2]. A notable percentage of diabetic patients are not aware of their disease (approximately 30% in Iran) [3]. Lag in the diagnosis of DM raises the expense of controlling disease and makes the progn...
